Summer = strawberries, smoothies and squeezy pops

Hurray!! It fiiiiinally feels like summer!!

One of our favourite things about summer is strawberry-picking, and our favourite place to go is Garelja Bros Strawberry Gardens. The aroma of juicy sweet strawberries surrounds you the minute you hop out of the car, and there’s no entry fee! Just pay $6 per kilo of strawberries that you pick!

Naturally, we go way overboard with how much we bring home…so, being the food geek that I am, the strawberries we picked gets sorted into ‘piles’: the ‘extra ripe’ ones (or the ones that got bruised/prodded/fought over on the way home) get hulled and chopped, then straight into ziplock bags and frozen, ready for future smoothies. The ‘least-ripe’ ones get washed in a vinegar bath (1 part vinegar to 8 parts water) then gently boxed up and stored in the fridge.
And the rest in between? They get eaten. They are eaten fresh on fruit skewers, covered in chocolate, covering pavlova, or made into smoothies/squeezy pops.

Smoothies are are a huge hit with my kids, often made from whatever fruit is in season and sitting in our fruit bowl (admittedly used in order of ripeness), but here are some of our favourite combinations (as named by lil man, after much deliberation):

Summer cooler
1c chopped frozen strawberries
1c chopped watermelon
1/2c coconut water
squeeze of lime (optional)
sprig of mint (optional)

1/2 ripe banana
1 kiwifruit (we like the golden ones)
1c frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
1/4c coconut cream
1/2c liquid (coconut water/almond milk/cows milk)

1/2 ripe banana
1c chopped pineapple
1/2 orange
1/2 mango
1/4c coconut cream
1/2c coconut water

2 peach
1/2 mango
1/4c coconut cream
1/2c coconut water

Razzy raspberry
1 ripe banana
1c frozen raspberries
1/2c plain unsweeneted yoghurt
1/2c coconut water

The blender gadget
You know how sometimes you get given gadgets that seem like a good idea, but then you never use them? Well, this is NOT one of them! I use my pink Blitz2Go pretty much every week. These smoothie recipes are made in the 600ml Blitz2Go bottle, then served in mason jars, or funneled into our Kai Carrier reusable pouches for the freezer, ready for school lunch boxes. IF there is any smoothie mix left over, it goes into squeezy pop moulds and into the freezer. The ones in the pic are Zipsicles which I got from Bubbalooz. I use these to trick my kids into thinking they’re getting a ‘treat’ (if you know my kids, you know how much they love ice cream)!
